Whether you are an old hand at organic vegetable gardening or you are newly come to this eco-friendly and useful hobby, you will find that there are many things that you need to know to make sure that your vegetable garden is going to grow strong and healthy.  To ensure the best crops year after year, there are some things to keep in mind.

1.Plan early
Remember that when it comes to your organic garden that you should always think about a good layout.  Whether you are thinking about a small patch or something that will take up a significant portion of your yard, you will find that the more layout work you do initially, the better your crop will be.

2.Check the sunlight
For the most part, you will find that a garden that has a southern exposure is going to be getting the most light.  If you want your garden to have the best harvests, you will find that you need to think about a garden that will pick up a good six hours of light a day.

3.Keep the birds away
One way to make sure that the birds aren’t going to be interested in your garden is to feed them something else.  Put a bird feeder across the yard from your garden.  Make sure that it is not too close, though, as seeds from your bird feeder can easily take root and sprout as weeds.

4.Watering
When you are getting ready to water your plants, you may be surprised to find that the old methods are best.  When you are looking to really soak the roots and to make the most out of the water that you have, remember that a watering can will let you thoroughly soak the roots while avoiding the leaves.

5.Choosing pest-repellent plants
When you are looking into ways to keep pests out of your garden, you may find that the best repellents can be planted.  Marigolds will keep pests away, while sage will repel black flea beetles and cabbage moths.  You will also find that chives can keep away aphids.

6.Start with seedlings
While you can of course start with seeds, seedlings have a better chance of surviving and growing up healthy.  Take some time to sprout your seedlings indoors in small plastic cups. When they are ready to go outside, cut out the bottom of the plastic cup so that the roots can go down, but put the whole thing in the garden; this will protect your seedling for a little bit longer.

7.Make the most out of your growing season
If you find that you are in a place where the growing season is short, but you want long season growth plants, start them during the off season.  This way, whenever the season rolls around, you’ll find that you can easily put the half-grown plants in the ground and get a terrific harvest.

8.Clean up after you weed
After you weed your plants, make sure that you clean your tools and your clothes; this will keep weed spores from returning to the garden.
